The Marco's Taxi saga began in Iowa City on May 5th, 2000 with the opening of Marco's Grilled Cheese in the heart of the Pedestrian Mall. Co-owners Mark Paterno and Pete Johnson first began their venture with the hope that night-owls and college students would appreciate hot quesadillas and grilled cheese sandwiches made to order all through the night. They weren't disappointed. The crowds around the Marco's cart soon became unmanageable and Mark and Pete were forced to acquire another staple of Iowa City late-night cuisine, George's Best Gyros.
Having conquered Iowa City's Pedestrian Mall, Mark and Pete turned their eye to what they saw as a plague upon their customers: disreputable taxi companies. After years of hearing customer's complaints, Mark and Pete decided enough was enough and hatched a scheme to gather the best and brightest under the Marco's umbrella, put them in quality cars and pay them a quality wage. In addition, every Marco's driver would have a voice in how Marco's Taxi would be run. If a driver had a genuinely good idea, why not implement it for everybody? In the fall of 2006, Marco's Taxi got it's first fare. The response since then has been extraordinary.
Marco's Taxi currently employs over 35 of Iowa City's most experienced drivers for its fleet of 13 cars and vans, carrying the distinction of being one of the city's most recognizable and sought-after brands.
